UFC 279: Daniel Rodriguez on short notice fight change: ‘I did what I had to do to win’ (Video)

Daniel Rodriguez narrows a win and is ready for another ranked opponent.

“D-Rod” Daniel Rodriguez earned a split decision win against “The Leech” Li Jingliang in a technical standup three-round affair. Rodriguez extends his win streak to four and now has a UFC record of 7-1.

But during UFC president Dana White’s post-fight interview he disagreed with the judges on the decision and so did many fans.

“Yeah, hearing it was a split decision,” Rodriguez told the media when asked how he thought the fight was scored. “It was a close fight, a really close fight. I thought I did more in the later rounds and I picked up the pace a little more. I did what I had to do to win the fight”, Rodriguez told the media.

With all the theatrics during fight week and the sudden change of opponents, Rodriguez essentially came in blind with no game plan for Jingliang.

“There was no preparation for this guy at all,” he said. “I barely had preparation for Holland, but like I said all the time I really don’t have any preparation for my opponents like I train really, really hard. Last minute switch up was definitely no preparation, we just knew he hit really hard and went out there and stick to the plan.”

After Khamzat Chimaev missed weight on Friday and all the dominoes started falling with new catchweight fights, Rodriguez was unsure what his status was with his scheduled fight against Kevin Holland. Rodriguez was fortunate enough that Jinglian stepped up and agreed to a new fight even if it was an eight pounds and a half difference.

“I wasn’t sure he was going to take the fight considering that I did weigh in nine pounds heavier than him,” he said. “When he did I was happy he accepted the fight. I have been looking to fight for, it’s been a while, I’m coming off a year layoff, and against an opponent like that, it was a crazy situation. Like I said before I’ll fight anybody, that’s why stepped up to fight Holland, and I stepped up to fight this guy.”
