Lauren Murphy defeated Miesha Tate via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28), at UFC Long Island on Saturday, July 16, 2022, live from the UBS Arena in Elmont, NY.
“I’ve dreamed about moments about this for my entire career… I wasn’t ready to be the champion. One ass-kicking isn’t going to stop me… I’m going to be in Paris, I’m going to be watching the fight between Jessica Andrade and Manon Fiorot… I want the winner,” said Murphy in a terrific post-fight interview. Murphy has become was of the best speakers in the UFC as she made a strong argument for why she should get another title fight in the future.

The women touched gloves to get the fight underway. The two women traded punches, with Murphy landing an overhand right. The crowd chanting “Miesha” seemed to inspire Murphy as she landed a combination, a knee to the body and a throw. Tate landed a strong right hand and followed it up with a quick left jab.
Murphy went for a takedown and eventually got Tate down for a second before Tate returned to her feet. From the clinch, Tate landed a knee. Murphy and Tate went to the ground, again only for a matter of seconds before returning to the feet and another clinch against the fence. Tate landed another knee to the body and a foot stomp. Murphy landed a jab on the break in a very competitive first round.
The women continued to move and trade punches to start the second round. Tate landed a pair of jabs but Tate’s nose was busted up and started to bleed. Murphy picked up and dumped Tate for the first official takedown of the fight. Murphy landed a strong right hand but Tate worked her way back up her feet. Tate continued to come forward but Murphy landed several jabs.
The two women engaged in another clinch with Murphy landing an elbow on the break. Tate landed a strong shot of her own and then a right hand. Murphy changed levels but Tate was able to defend it. Tate went for her own takedown but had it stuffed by Murphy. From the clinch, Tate landed several knees and then a massive elbow. The two women traded knees as time ran out in the second round.
Tate came out of her corner aggressively, walking down Murphy. Tate went for a takedown but Murphy used her strength to reverse it. The two women returned to their feet. Tate’s face was extremely swollen and the white shirt she was wearing was covered in blood. From the clinch, Murphy landed a punch and a knee. From the break, Murphy landed a two-shot combo. Tate landed a front kick to the body and followed it up with a front kick to the body. The two women started trading punches with 90 seconds remaining. Murphy changed levels and went for a takedown but Tate was able to defend it. Tate continued to push forward and landed a couple of jabs. Murphy responded with a couple of jabs. The horn sounded to end a very entertaining action fight.
In her last fight, Murphy was easily beaten by UFC flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 266. The loss ended Murphy’s five-fight winning streak. Recently, Murphy revealed that she was dealing with an illness during her title fight. Now healthy, Murphy is focused on becoming a champion. Murphy was very self-aware that she was soundly beaten by Shevchenko and will have to win another fight if she is going to get another title fight.
Following a loss in her last fight against Ketlen Vieira, Tate decided to drop down in weight. After spending nearly her entire career at bantamweight, Tate decided to drop down to flyweight. While Tate did not win the fight, she was competitive and should get another top contender in her next fight.
