UFC Vegas 54: Jan Błachowicz vs. Aleksandar Rakić preview and prediction

Two of the best light heavyweights in the world clash in the main event of UFC Vegas 54. Who will potentially earn themselves a title shot?

Saturday, May 14, UFC Vegas 54 will be taking place live from the UFC APEX. This will be a pivotal matchup in the light heavyweight division as No. 1 ranked Jan Błachowicz takes on the No. 3 ranked Aleksandar Rakić.

Błachowicz was the light heavyweight champion of the world until he lost the belt to current champ Glover Texiera at UFC 267. He wants to win his gold back. However, a surging contender who wants to become champion as well stands in his way.

Jan Błachowicz vs Aleksandar Rakic: Who will get their hand raised at UFC Vegas 54?

Before being dethroned by Texiera, Błachowicz was on the run of a lifetime. He was on a five-fight win streak that included moments like handing Israel Adesanya his first defeat, winning the championship over Dominick Reyes, and viciously knocking out Luke Rockhold and Corey Anderson.

Currently, Błachowicz holds an MMA record of 28-9. He’s won nine fights by submission and eight fights by knockout. Błachowicz started off his UFC with two wins and four losses. That makes his rise to becoming a champion more inspiring. Plenty of impressive victories was listed earlier, but his resume is much more than those three wins. Błachowicz has also defeated the likes of Jacare Souza, Jared Cannonier, and Nikita Krylov. The 39-year-old has only fought the best of the best in his UFC tenure.

Standing across him in the octagon is the 30-year-old Rakić. Now entering the prime of his career, Rakić holds an impressive MMA record of 14-2 where he’s won 10 of his fights by finish. Despite only being in the UFC since 2017, he holds a pretty impressive resume where he holds victories over Anthony Smith, Thiago Santos, and Devin Clark. Rakić’s most highlight-reel moment was his vicious knockout of Jimi Manuwa.

This bout gives us two lightweights who can truly strike. They have the willingness and patience to put on a striking clinic but also have the ability to put out your lights whenever they feel like it. Błachowicz may have the more knockout power of the two but Rakić has the better patience and movement. This is a fight that seems even everywhere it goes, but my one worry comes to the chins. Błachowicz has taken shots before so we know he can take a hit. However, Rakić’s chin has never been tested in the UFC. That’s a great compliment to his striking defense. However, having to go from not having your chin tested to taking on potentially the hardest hitting 205-pound man is challenging. Plus with Błachowicz having more experience, I have to give him the edge.

Prediction: Błachowicz by 4th round knock out
