ONE Winter Warriors: Who is Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida?

Get to know emerging heavyweight prospect, Buchecha, ahead of ONE: Winter Warriors.

Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida will make his second MMA appearance and compete under the ONE Championship banner once again. He will be taking on Jj Won Kang on Dec. 3 as part of the ONE: Winter Warriors event in Singapore.

The heavyweight prospect is fairly new to the MMA scene, having only competed one time in his post-grappling career. He did so against Anderson Silva (not the Anderson Silva). This Silva, unlike his legendary counterpart, is only 3-2 in MMA and Almeida was able to easily submit him at just 2:53 of the opening round in September.

After some time off, Almeida’s focus now shifts to his next opponent and keeping his undefeated streak alive.

Who is Ji Won Kang?

That challenge comes in the form of Ji Won Kang, another fellow prospect who sits at 5-0 as a professional and recently competed in March. Unlike Almeida, who began on the grappling circuit, Kang has been competing in MMA since July 2013 before finally turning pro in Oct. 2018. Since he made the switch, the wins have come in bunches.

The bout with Almeida will be Kang’s third under the ONE Championship banner, as his last win came against Amir Aliakbari. He knocked out Aliakbari with a counter left-hook under two minutes into the fight, which marked his fifth-straight finish since turning professional only three years ago.

It’s safe to assume that both men will be looking for the finish early and often come fight night, although it appears that Almeida has the grappling edge given his decade-long resume competing in tournaments all across the globe.

A question will be answered Dec. 3, and that question remains how will Almeida respond to the pressure of a more experienced opponent.
