UFC Vegas 40: Aspen Ladd vs. Norma Dumont preview and prediction

UFC Vegas 40: Aspen Ladd vs. Norma Dumont preview and prediction.

In what many have called the strangest UFC main event in recent memory, third-ranked bantamweight contender Aspen Ladd will step up on short notice to battle rising featherweight Norma Dumont at UFC Vegas 40 in a matchup at 145 pounds.

Ladd will fill in for the injured former UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm, who suffered an injury during her fight camp that forced her to withdraw. Ladd was originally supposed to face Macy Chiasson at UFC Vegas 39 before the fight was canceled after she failed to make weight.

Despite her weight-cutting issues, Ladd has managed to put herself right in the thick of things in the bantamweight title picture. She hasn’t competed in the octagon in nearly two years since her knockout win over Yana Kunitskaya at UFC on ESPN 7.

Ladd faces a tough challenge on short notice in Dumont, who many believe has the potential to be a UFC champion down the line. She’s coming off of back-to-back wins over Felicia Spencer and Ashlee Evans-Smith.

Many UFC fans were perplexed by the promotion’s decision to reward Ladd with a short-notice main event bout against Dumont. But, with bantamweight and featherweight champion Amanda Nunes facing Julianna Pena later this year, the Ladd vs. Dumont winner could potentially get a fight against Nunes with a win.

Who will win at UFC Vegas 40: Aspen Ladd or Norma Dumont?

Both Ladd and Dumont possess heavy hands with the potential to finish the fight at any moment. While this bout is set for five rounds, the action could be stopped early.

Ladd is undoubtedly one of the best female prospects in the UFC, with incredible potential at both 135 and 145 pounds. But, this will be her first fight at featherweight against a seasoned veteran in the division in Dumont.

The striking exchanges will determine the outcome of this fight. If Dumont can control the pace as she did in her last fight against Spencer, it could be a long night in the octagon for Ladd.

Ladd has shown the toughness needed to compete amongst the elite in women’s MMA but hasn’t competed against a potent striker such as Dumont. Cardio could also be a big factor in the fight, as Ladd puts her body through another cut at a higher weight than she’s used to.

Dumont also possesses underrated grappling which she has seldom used since arriving in the UFC. If she’s able to get Ladd’s back, she could finish the fight in a hurry.

Ladd will have her moments early, but there are too many external factors that aren’t in her favor. Dumont will take a patient approach early and find her groove late to earn the stoppage.

Prediction: Dumont via TKO, Round 3
