UFC Vegas 38: Thiago Santos feels on the verge of another title shot despite lackluster fight with Johnny Walker (Video)
Thiago Santos feels on the verge of another title shot despite a lackluster fight with Johnny Walker at UFC Vegas 38.
Despite the fight not living up to expectations, Thiago Santos feels proud of his win over Johnny Walker at UFC Vegas 38. Santos and Walker appeared gun-shy for the majority of the contest, but Santos was the more active striker and walked away with a split decision win.
It was arguably a must-win situation for Santos, who had lost three fights in a row including the light heavyweight title to Jon Jones at UFC 239. During his UFC Vegas 38 post-fight press conference, Santos reiterated his desire to fight a top contender for his next octagon appearance,
“I won that fight, no question about that,” Santos said. “I don’t like refusing fights, but I feel that I deserve something more. I want the champion and I think that I deserve a Top-5 contender. With another win, I feel I deserve the next title shot. Give me one week.”
Santos also called for a fight with Jiri Prochazka, who will serve as the backup to Jan Blachowicz vs. Glover Teixeira at UFC 267. If Prochazka doesn’t get the next shot at the belt right away, Santos appears open to a fight to stay active in the division.
Thiago Santos snapped a three-fight losing streak with the win
It’s been a long road to get back in the win column for Santos, who had suffered back-to-back disappointing losses to Aleksandar Rakic and Glover Teixeira. But, Santos used his signature body kicks to keep Walker out of range and control the pace of the fight.
There’s no telling what could be next for Santos in the octagon, but it sounds like he’s willing to fight right away to inch closer to another light heavyweight title shot.
