1 under-the-radar UFC fight you don’t want to miss this September
The UFC has a rare off-weekend, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t fights to look forward to.
For the first time in three weeks, the UFC is scheduled to take a break from its weekly event schedule. With that in mind, the MMA calendar for the weekend of Sept. 11 seems rather dim. However, that doesn’t mean that it will last long, as Dana White’s Contender Series is in full swing.
Saturday, Sept.18, the promotion will remain present at the UFC APEX, as the event is headlined by former light heavyweight title challengers Anthony Smith and Ryan Spann in the main event. While the card doesn’t feature many notable stars, there is one under-the-radar fight that fans should look forward to.
Joaquin Buckley vs. Antonio Arroyo is the fight to watch in September
Joaquin Buckley and Antonio Arroyo will meet in a middleweight bout to open the main card of UFC Vegas 37. Buckley is, who is 12-4, best known for his jumping back kick KO against Impa Kasanganay while on Fight Island in October 2020. Since that fight, Buckley has gone 1-1, most recently losing by head-kick KO against Alessio Di Chirico in the opening round.
As for Arroyo, he is 9-4 and has been with the UFC since 2019 after earning a contract via DWCS in July 2019, as he defeated Stephen Regman by second-round arm-triangle choke. Ever since the win, Arroyo has not been able to translate the same success into the Octagon. He has had numerous cancellations, and in his most recent bout, saw him lose to Deron Winn by unanimous decision in Nov. 2020. He has yet to earn a victory since joining the promotion two years ago.
Can Buckley deliver another highlight-reel KO or will Arroyo finally get his feet wet and earn his first official UFC win? A week from now, exclusively on ESPN+, the world will find out the answer.
