UFC Vegas 36: Khalil Rountree defeated Modestas Bukauskas.
Khalil Rountree defeated Modestas Bukauskas via TKO (leg kick), Round 2 – 2:30 at UFC Vegas 36 on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021, live from the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, NV.
“My mindset was just win. Be ready for all confrontation and handle it head-on… I saw that he was very heavy on his front foot on a jab,” said Rountree, describing how he scouted out Bukauskas to know when to throw the finishing kick.
Rountree aggressively came out of his corner to start the fight, knowing he needed a victory. Rountree was aggressive and landing powerful punches in the opening minute that hurt Bukauskas. Despite the onslaught, Bukauskas survived the first round. In the second round, Rountree ended it. Half way through the round, Rountree landed a vicious leg to directly on the outside of the knee. Immediately, Bukauskas crumpled to the ground in pain. Referee Herb Dean stopped the fight before Rountree had the chance to move in.
Rountree entered the Octagon knowing he could be fighting for his UFC career, after losing three of his previous four games. In his last fight, Rountree lost by unanimous decision to Marcin Prachnio at UFC 257. With his victory, Rountree improved to 9-5 with six knockouts.
Bukauskas entered Saturday’s fight on a two-fight losing streak after winning his UFC debut. In his last fight, Bukauskas lost a split decision to Michał Oleksiejczuk at UFC 260. Bukauskas was helped out of the Octagon, with doctors bracing his knee.
