Islam Mamedov isn’t interested in a rematch with Brent Primus after split-decision win at Bellator 263 (Video)

Islam Mamedov had a lot to say after getting the win over former champion Brent Primus at Bellator 263.

Bellator lightweight Islam Mamedov has emerged as a new contender, after defeating former champion Brent Primus in his promotional debut at Bellator 263.

In a back-and-forth war that had the MMA community debating on who ultimately won the fight, Mamedov used his grappling to control Primus on the ground and not allow him to transition out of bottom position for a majority of the bout. After the fight, Primus seemed frustrated while the official decision was being read, and Mamedov doesn’t feel that he needs to run it back with him anytime soon after getting the victory.

“He has to do something to deserve a rematch,” Mamedov told FanSided’s Amy Kaplan in his post-fight interview. “What did he do in these three rounds to get the victory? He didn’t do anything. Didn’t knock me down, didn’t hurt me. Now he has to sit and be unhappy that he’s not on my level.”

The controversy over the split decision stems from Mamedov’s reluctance to do a lot offensively when he was in a position to either finish Primus or hit him with vicious ground-and-pound striking. It was a fight that the raucous crowd at the arena booed due to the lack of consistent action from both sides.

Islam Mamedov has won an astounding 19 fights in a row

Primus entered the bout coming off of back-to-back wins over Chris Bungard and Tim Wilde, following a devastating loss to Michael Chandler at Bellator 212. After voicing his displeasure with the matchup with Mamedov numerous times during fight week, he’ll need to reflect on what he wants next after being frustrated by Bellator’s matchmaking and rankings system.

Mamedov’s victory over Primus was his 19th in a row, and he’s now a rising contender in the Bellator lightweight division. He’ll surely get another tough test for his next fight in the promotion.

Bellator 263 took place on July 31, 2021, live from Forum in Los Angeles, CA. Follow along with FanSided for all your live news and highlights.
