Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard revealed on Instagram on Tuesday night that he has requested a trade off the team.
The Miami Dolphins are coming off an impressive 10-win season in 2020 due to the play of the defense, the secondary in particular. Despite star cornerback Xavien Howard reporting to training camp on Tuesday, he has no plans to play for the Dolphins in 2021 and beyond.
Howard took to his personal Instagram account on Tuesday night to let the world know that he has officially requested a trade off the Dolphins. Until the team officially sends him to another team, Howard will continue to report to Miami’s training camp.

There was uncertainty as to whether Howard would even report to training camp, as he did not report to mandatory minicamp earlier this offseason. That was due to his unhappiness with his current contract, which is touched upon in his post. He states that he did not want a new contract. Rather, he wanted some adjustments to his current deal.
Howard signed a five-year, $75.25 million contract extension back in 2019. But as he points out in his post, he is the second-highest paid cornerback on the Dolphins. He is referring to teammate Byron Jones, who signed a five-year, $82.5 million contract back in 2020.
The 2020 season was a great one for Howard, as he recorded a league-high 20 defended passes and 10 interceptions through 16 games. As for his interceptions, those are the most recorded by a single player since 2007 when Antonio Cromartie did so with the then-San Diego Chargers.
With Howard wanting out of Miami, all eyes will be on the Dolphins to see when they will trade their star cornerback. Considering the solid campaign he is coming off of, there will no doubt be plenty of suitors.
