Bellator 255: Patricio Pitbull quickly chokes out Emmanuel Sanchez, advances to finals

Patricio Pitbull will meet A.J. McKee in the Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix finals following win over Emmanuel Sanchez

Named the top men’s pound-for-pound fighter in the inaugural Bellator rankings earlier this week, Patricio “Pitbull” Freire — often considered one of the greatest to ever enter the Bellator cage — retained the Bellator featherweight championship with a quick submission win over Emmanuel Sanchez in their Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix semifinal.

As a result of the win, Freire will now face the undefeated A.J. McKee in the finals of the tournament.

The two exchanged heated words in the cage following Freire’s victory.

Patricio Pitbull retains featherweight title by submitting Emmanuel Sanchez at Bellator 255

This was a rematch from Bellator 209, which saw Freire retain the championship against Sanchez by a unanimous decision.

Sanchez tried to bring the pressure, but Freire stayed back and focused on landing counterstrikes, which has been bringing him most of his recent success.

Freire soon landed a combination that dropped Sanchez before locking in a guillotine choke. Sanchez tapped but referee Todd Anderson missed it, leading to Sanchez passing out in the hold at just over three-and-a-half minutes into the fight.

This now marks Freire’s seventh overall defense of the Bellator featherweight title and third in this reign.

Bellator 255 took place on Friday, April 2, 2021, live from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. Follow along with FanSided for all your live news and highlights.
