Bellator 255: Usman Nurmagomedov is the fighter to watch

Undefeated lightweight prospect Usman Nurmagomedov is the fighter to watch this Friday at Bellator 255.

As Showtime is set to make it’s Bellator MMA debut this Friday, so is Usman Nurmagomedov. The undefeated lightweight fighter comes to the promotion from overseas with a perfect record of 11-0. Nurmagomedov trains out of American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, CA, and is coached by none other than Javier Mendez.

Nurmagomedov has witnessed the rise and triumphs of his older cousin and former UFC lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov, and will certainly look to replicate that type of success throughout his own career. While cut from the same cloth, Nurmagomedov does finish his fights at a much higher clip, with 10 of his 11 career wins coming either via knockout or submission. Nurmagomedov differs from some of his Dagestani counterparts at the same stage in their careers as he possesses a more well-rounded skillset, as demonstrated by his seven knockout finishes.

Nurmagomedov fought primarily in UAE Warriors and Gorilla Fighting Championships before signing with Bellator, competing mainly in his native Russia or throughout the Middle East.

Who will Usman Nurmagomedov take on at Bellator 255?

Nurmagomedov will compete on the main card of Bellator 255 in a lightweight feature fight against Mike Hamel. Hamel (7-4) is 1-2 in his last three fights, however, he was able to push the 16-1 Adam Borics to a split decision, someone who not too long ago was considered the dark horse to win the featherweight World Grand Prix. Either way, Nurmagomedov is receiving a very favorable matchup here given his style, and should be able to deal with Hamel’s skillset fairly well. With a win, Nurmagomedov will get his Bellator career off on the right foot and remain unbeaten, but the higher he climbs up the ladder at 155 pounds, the more challenging the matchups will become. If he can grab a win or two he will most likely find himself in the top-10 of the newly created Bellator rankings. Surely the question on everyone’s mind given his last name is will he end up like his cousin Khabib? The potential is clearly there, but it remains to be seen if the Nurmagomedov name will be as dominant in Bellator as it was in the UFC.

Tune into the main card of Bellator 255 to see how Nurmagomedov fares in his North American and promotional debut.
