It’s looking more and more likely that star wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster will be leaving the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency this offseason.
Early on in his career, wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster has won over countless hearts in the Steel City. The Pittsburgh Steelers fan base absolutely loves him, as he’s great on the field and simply charismatic off of it.
With that being said, it really does look like this marriage is about to come to an end. With Smith-Schuster set to become an unrestricted free agent later this month, even the Steelers’ own website posted that it’s unlikely the team will be able to offer him the kind of money he’ll be looking for.
Steelers fans may need to get used to seeing JuJu Smith-Schuster in a different uniform
In his four years in Pittsburgh, Smith-Schuster really impressed, catching 308 balls for 3,726 yards and 26 touchdowns. He really jumped onto the scene in 2018, posting a mind-blowing 111 receptions for 1,426 yards and seven scores. As you might have been able to guess, he earned Pro Bowl honors that season.
Now that he’s set to be a free agent, though, the 6-foot-1, 215-pounder is unquestionably looking to get a big-time deal. With that said, the Steelers are cap-strapped and surely won’t be able to give him a lucrative kind of contract he’ll be eyeing. Smith-Schuster will be hoping to be paid like one of the top receivers in the game, and Pittsburgh simply doesn’t have the cap space to get that done.
With Ben Roethlisberger all set to come back in 2021 for what very well could be his last dance with Pittsburgh, the Steelers are hoping to send him out in style with a Super Bowl trip. However, should that happen, it may end up coming without one of his favorite wideouts in Smith-Schuster.
