Justin Gaethje says Nate Diaz is making empty challenge to Dustin Poirier

Justin Gaethje doesn’t believe we’ll be seeing Nate Diaz return soon

The fallout from UFC 257 for the lightweight division seems to be never-ending, as Justin Gaethje now enters his way into the fray following Nate Diaz’s callout of Dustin Poirier.

As the MMA community debated about where Poirier should go next following his huge second-round TKO of Conor McGregor in the main event of UFC 257, Diaz chimed in with a challenge to Poirier.

Diaz and Poirier were scheduled to face each other at UFC 230 but that fight fell through.

Justin Gaethje calls Nate Diaz ‘The dude that only talks about it’

While this may seem like a big opportunity for Diaz to return to the Octagon with Poirier’s win and McGregor’s loss — and him seeming to be a good opponent for either — Gaethje chimed in on the social media chatter.

Diaz fought a pair of memorable clashes with McGregor in 2016 before disappearing from the Octagon, only interested in money fights and/or fights that would interest him — whether they made sense or not.

Diaz eventually did return to the UFC at UFC 241, defeating Anthony Pettis in a unanimous decision. He and Jorge Masvidal then competed in a fight for the custom ‘BMF’ belt at UFC 244, losing via a controversial doctor’s stoppage after three rounds. Diaz hasn’t been back in the Octagon since.

Gaethje entered UFC 257 still the No. 1 ranked fighter at 155, having been a former interim champion who lost a title shot with Nurmagomedov as Poirier did in 2019.

For what it’s worth, at his own UFC 257 post-fight press conference, Poirier said a matchup with Diaz or a vacant title fight with Charles Oliveira — or even a trilogy fight with McGregor — have more interest for him than a vacant title fight with Gaethje or Michael Chandler.

UFC 257 took place on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021, live from Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Follow along with FanSided for all your live news and highlights.
