The UFC heads back to Fight Island on Jan. 16 where Phil Hawes makes the walk to the Octagon again.
The New Year is here, and mixed martial arts is gearing back up for another 365 days of action. Things kick-off for the UFC on Jan. 16 when the promotion travels back to Fight Island and back to network television. UFC Fight Island 7 features a big main event featherweight contest as Max Holloway battles Calvin Kattar. There’s value down the card as well and Phil Hawes is one of the names that fight fans need to pay close attention to.
Hawes is stepping back into the Octagon for the third straight time in this current stint. Fans of the Dana White Contender Series will recognize him as he has competed twice on that show. Back in 2017, he dropped a fight to Julian Marquez, getting finished in the second round of that contest via head kick. Hawes took that loss and learned from his mistakes, rattling off five-straight wins since.
Hawes is an intriguing name in combat sports as he is performed for many of the largest promotions in the industry. He is stepped into the cage for World Series of Fighting, Bellator, and Brave FC before being brought back into the UFC in 2020. He made the most of that run, winning all his bouts by finish.
Hawes is 31-years old but has a very meager 9-2 record: still fresh in the mixed martial arts industry. In a sport where highlights translate into marketability, Hawes is the type of fighter fans enjoy watching. In his 11 professional fights, none have lasted longer than the second round. Eight of his nine wins came within the first round, including his most recent win which was an 18-second win over Jacob Malkoun at UFC 254 in October.
Phil Hawes will face heavy-hitter Nassourdine Imavov
Hawes is competing against another 9-2 fighter, Nassourdine Imavov. He is another heavy hitter that is not expected to shy away from Hawes, which makes for a fight that might end swiftly. This is the exact type of booking one should expect as the UFC continues to look for new fighters to put in front of fight fans.
UFC Fight Island 7 takes place on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021, live from Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Follow along with FanSided for all your live news and highlights.
