Watch Conor McGregor destroy Dustin Poirier ahead of their UFC 257 rematch (Video)

Re-live Conor McGregor’s first bout with Dustin Poirier from 2014.

In just a little over three weeks, the UFC 2021 event schedule will be underway. The final show during the UFC’s third stint on Fight Island is UFC 257, which is headlined by a lightweight rematch between former double-champion, Conor McGregor, and one-time title challenger, Dustin Poirier. McGregor makes his return to the Octagon for the first time since Jan. 2020, as he dispatched Donald Cerrone in under a minute, while Poirier is coming off a five-round war against Dan Hooker in June 2020.

Poirier will enter his 11th year with the promotion, while McGregor enters his seventh. Both men plan to run it back in Abu Dhabi, but before they do, fans have a chance to re-live the first bout, which took place at UFC 178 from Las Vegas in Sept. 2014. The bout is part of the UFC’s Free Fight series on YouTube and is available for a limited time.

At the time of the fight, McGregor was on the verge of superstardom, while Poirier had quietly worked his way up the rankings as a member of the featherweight division. There were all of the necessary ingredients for an instant classic, as it lived up to the hype. McGregor eventually got the last laugh, as he finished Poirier with a first-round TKO nearly two minutes in.

The win propelled McGregor to an eventual title shot, as he knocked off Jose Aldo to win the featherweight title in Dec. 2015.

What happened to Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier after their bout?

While McGregor was a world champion, Poirier worked his way into title contention, which included a move to lightweight. Poirier went 9-1 over his next 10 outings before finally getting a title shot against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

McGregor tried his hand at boxing before returning to MMA, only to lose to Nurmagomedov in his quest to regain the belt. Only time will tell how a rematch between McGregor and Poirier will dictate the remainder of their storied careers.

UFC 257 takes place on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021, live from Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Follow along with FanSided for all your live news and highlights.
