FanSided MMA Awards: Johnny Campbell’s ripped ear is the Most Gruesome Injury (PHOTO)
Ben Roethlisberger took play-calling into his own hands in second-half comeback
The Most Gruesome Injury award of 2020 goes out to Johnny Campbell.
In what was the first event back since the global coronavirus pandemic for Taura MMA, the co-main event for the interim bantamweight title at Taura MMA 10 between Johnny Campbell and Ary Farias delivered us the most gruesome injury of the year.
Campbell (20-13) entered the championship bout a winner of four straight fights all by way of finish, while Farias (10-2) came in with a four-fight win streak of his own that included three finishes. Violence was to be expected when these two met in the cage, but we’re not sure anybody expected what would happen in just the very first round.
Unlike most of the nasty injuries we see in the world of mixed martial arts that come in the latter half of the fights, this year’s most gruesome of them all came in just 40 seconds of fight time.
After exchanging strikes on the feet for the first 20 seconds, Campbell slipped moving backward after eating a right hand and shot at the legs for a takedown that would result in Farias taking the back position of Campbell. From here, Farias was able to land a few more punches and an elbow to Campbell’s left ear. It’s hard to tell whether the strike on the feet or the elbow on the ground is responsible for nearly tearing Campbell’s ear off.
Below is a photo – not for those with squeamish stomachs – showing the immediate aftermath of Campbell’s gruesome injury.
As a result, the fight would be stopped just seconds later when the referee got his eyes on the damage of Campbell’s mangled left ear, making Farias the Taura MMA bantamweight champion and a winner by TKO in just 40 seconds. Campbell initially protested the stoppage but stopped once he realized the condition his ear was in.
