Twitter reacts to Cowboy Cerrone submitting Rafael dos Anjos twice at bizarre SUG 19

See the reactions to Donald Cerrone & Rafael dos Anjos’ controversial reset.

It’s not every day where an MMA competitor has to submit their opponent twice in one night, but Donald Cerrone had to do just that against Rafael dos Anjos at Submission Underground 19.

Dos Anjos had taken the win both times when he and Cerrone faced off in MMA, defeating “Cowboy” by unanimous decision in August 2013 and retaining the lightweight championship with a 66-second TKO of Cerrone in December 2015.

This time around, Cerrone got the better of dos Anjos, but it wasn’t without controversy. As Cerrone locked in an armbar on RDA in overtime, the referee called a halt to the contest. But dos Anjos argued that what the referee took as a tap was him trying to grab at Cerrone’s leg.

A little later on, Chael Sonnen announced that Cerrone and RDA were going to re-do their overtime period immediately after the main event. Sonnen said that he wasn’t a fan of the decision, but somehow, for whatever reason, had no power to stop it.

Cerrone would end up getting the submission again, and plenty of people had fun with what made the overtime “re-do” pointless. Others, however, said Cerrone allowing for the bout to be done over is another example of what makes “Cowboy” so beloved by the MMA community.

Nearly 20 years ago at UFC 37, Murilo Bustamante retained the UFC middleweight championship against Matt Lindland in a fight where Bustamante had to submit Lindland twice as well. After referee “Big” John McCarthy saw Lindland submit to an armbar early on, he thought he was mistaken and Lindland was allowed to continue.

Bustamante eventually submitted Lindland with a guillotine in the third round.
